Stiles Family Crest and History

Origin Displayed: English

Where did the English Stiles family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Stiles family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

In ancient Anglo-Saxon England, the Stiles family lived in the Cheshire area, some say before the Norman Invasion of England, in 1066.

Until quite recently, the English language has lacked a definite system of spelling rules. Consequently, Anglo-Saxon surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. Changes in Anglo-Saxon names were influenced by the evolution of the English language, as it incorporated elements of French, Latin, and other languages. Although Medieval scribes and church officials recorded names as they sounded, so it is common to find one person referred to by several different spellings of his surname, even the most literate people varied the spelling of their own names. Variations of the name Stiles include Stiles, Styals, Styles, Style, Stoyle, Steggle, Steagall, Steggal and many more.

First found in Bedfordshire, where the family was seated in early times. The earliest known bearer of the name was Reginald atte Stighel, who was recorded in the Assize Rolls of 1227. The Stiles family branched to other counties at an early date, also appearing in Somerset, where William de Stile and Osmund Atthe Stihele were living in 1229 and 1234 respectively, as well as in Sussex, where William ate Stegel was recorded in the Subsidy Rolls of 1296.

Searching for a better life, many English families migrated to British colonies. Unfortunately, the majority of them traveled under extremely harsh conditions: overcrowding on the ships caused the majority of the immigrants to arrive diseased, famished, and destitute from the long journey across the ocean. For those families that arrived safely, modest prosperity was attainable, and many went on to make invaluable contributions to the development of the cultures of the new colonies. Research into the Origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Stiles or a variant listed above: Francis Stiles, who settled in New England in 1630; Joan Stiles, who immigrated to Boston in 1635; Nathaniel Stiles, who came to Virginia in 1639; as did Elizabeth Stiles in 1721.

Family Crests: Elements

In the Stiles coat of arms as in all coat of arms, the crest is only one element of the full armorial achievement. Again the Family Crest is just part of the story of Coats of Arms or Heraldry. Heraldry is defined as the hereditary art or science of blazoning, the description is appropriate technical terms of Coats-of-Arms and other heraldic and armorial insignia, and is of very ancient origin.

My mother is a Belfit. Her dad Thatcher george Belfit died in 1929 from Typhoidf. Her Mom, Maida is a Stiles. This Stiles family came to Hamden CT, Suffield CT in the early 17th century and is also related to the Canadian Steven’s family who built the St Lawrence Seaway….I inherited all their china, silverware, furniture and have it placed in our 300 year old home in North Haven CT. The Stiles (John Stiles) built the Stile sbrick company in North haven and in the late 20th Century was the largest Brick Company in North America. I hope this helps. My son Chris is quite the expert on Stiles Geneolgy….does anyone have confirmation that our families first female relative birthed the first American in 1623? There is a small museum in the Boston area dedicated to that event! The Stiles are not just a family name. The Stiles have been the leaders in Western Europe advances since the 2nd century! While most Stiles in America were farmers, Ezera was not, the Thatcher George Slausons were industrialisms, artists and inventors and my family are the same. It’s in our genetic code to question the status quo and change America for the better. Lets get to work. Oh, build back better is much different than “making America great again’ . MAGA will destroy us.

With almost 10 percent inflation and 5 dollar gas now with criminals and drugs flooding across the southern border I wonder if you still think Build Back Better is the answer for American?

Stiles was my grandmother’s maiden name, we are directly related through to John Stiles who arrived in Connecticut .

I’m grateful and also feel it’s interesting that there are a variety of sites and I have a book as well dedicated to the Stiles family. Not knowing a whole lot about the true state of things in England before the migration; it leaves me wondering if there was an incident or set of incidents leading to the departure.

Charles, John Stiles was my 14th G-Grandfather. He came over from Milbrooke England in 1635 with his wife and brothers Thomas, Henry, and Francis and their families as master carpenters to build what is now Windsor CT. for an English lord. There is a whole book about this family by a Dr. Henry Reed. If you have already found this stuff out, keep on researching’. Have a good day ‘cuz’

Sally, I’m a Stiles whose family comes from Pomeroy. The Stiles came from the Chemung, NY area in the early to mid 1800s . My 4th G-Grand father was Keeny Stiles who came from NY with his family. I have a copy of a photo that shows my 3rd G-Grandfather and his family up on the ridge of Bunker Hill. Two generations later my line moved up to Wellsburg WV to work in the glass factory. I’m thinking that Dell may have been a cousin to my line.

Yes, but they never met in person.. only by correspondence. I have found copies of letters between the two of them.

There is an excellent book I found, “The Stiles Family in America” which was compiled by Ezra Stiles and published by a cousin. It is the best reference on the Stiles family probably in existance. I found my Grandfather in it so I know it is my line of Stiles.

Hello Wilbur, I am interested in your genealogy if you are willing to share. I have tracked my genealogy back to Bartholomew Stiles (1721-1804)of Depthford, Gloucester, NJ. Bartholomew’s father was name John Stiles but that is where I have ran in to a wall. Any insight would be much appreciated.

For Stiles descended from Windsor, CT searching “Humphrey Style” will be most interesting. Also interesting is linking up the maternal sideS<- from there. I would tell what's there but I don't want to spoil the surprise.

Recall always, the Stiles/Style line in England preceded William the Conquerer.

Yes. And I, as a (/an 11th generation) Style/Stiles descendent became friends with a descendent of Benjamin Franklin, in CA. Imagine our surprise when we discovered correspondence between Ezra Stiles and Benjamin Franklin was displayed at Stiles college at Yale University. We met because a (ex-boy friend) friend had pointed out that we looked alike. I made it a point of meeting her. We became good friends (until she passed away).
